Jeffcoat Hybridizer Award Winners

Jeffcoat Hybridizer Award Winners

Compiled by Ken Cobb

At the 1976 National Convention in Raleigh, NC, Dr. John Lambert was awarded the coveted Bertrand Farr Silver Medal for his achievements in Hemerocallis hybridizing. As the first in Region 15 to receive this honor, it was decided to honor him further by naming a new award for him – the Lambert Award. This is given annually to the most outstanding daylily cultivar hybridized in Region 15 as voted by regional members from a nomination ballot.

This award serves a two-fold purpose. First, to recognize advances in hybridizing and second, to encourage regional hybridizers. Initially, ten nominations were made by Garden Judges and a ballot was presented after bloom season. Currently, hybridizers may nominate their best  registration of the last ten years and the ballot is published prior to bloom season. Thus, it is no longer restricted to ten total nominations.

A hybridizer is ineligible to win again in the next three calendar years after having a cultivar win the competition, nor can a cultivar remain on the ballot for longer than three consecutive years. A cultivar can only win once. John Lambert asked that his cultivars not be eligible. In 1991, he felt he had been “honored enough” and asked that his name be removed from the award. Thus, it continued with a generic name through 2007.

In 2008, the Lowcountry Daylily Society began sponsoring the award previously named "Lambert Award." With their sponsorship, the name of the award was changed to the "Jeffcoat Hybridizer Award" in honor of Jim and Peggy Jeffcoat. The Lowcountry sponsorship of the Jeffcoat Hybridizer Award currently continues through 2017.

Initially an engraved pewter plate, in more recent years the award has sometimes been a tray, but more frequently a plaque. The Awards Management Committee maintains the Jeffcoat Hybridizer Award winners list.

Note...

  1. Although the rule is that a cultivar cannot win twice, H. 'Prester John' won in both 1980 and 1988.

  2. Due to missing documentation (either missing regional business meeting minutes or missing/unpublished issues of the Hem-alina), data for 1990 is incomplete. Efforts will continue to resolve this.
